Unplanned pregnancy, and in particular unwanted pregnancy, has a wide range of serious consequences. One of the most obvious is, of course, abortion. In 2001, there were approximately 1.3 million abortions in the United States, and although this number has been decreasing, the abortion rate in this country is still higher than in most other developed countries. Listed in this factsheet are a variety of additional consequences, beginning with some important new findings from Child Trends, a nonpartisan research organization based in Washington, DC (www.childtrends.org).
