With more than 28 years of volunteer and community-based experience, Beth Atherton possesses a vast understanding of nonprofit development and management. Her insight and proven track record in the community is highly regarded within the nonprofit sector.
Atherton currently serves as the Executive Director for Caritas of Austin where she has exhibited sound judgment and savvy business sense. During her tenure with Caritas, Atherton has navigated the nonprofit through the challenges Hurricane Katrina and led the force behind Caritas’ earned income project. Most recently, Atherton has taken on the issue of affordable housing and applied Caritas’ comprehensive approach as a solution to a growing problem in the community.
Exemplifying her ability to lead and garner community support is through a partnership between Caritas of Austin and Summit Housing Partners. Through grassroots efforts in the community the partnership has gained momentum and support for additional affordable housing units in east Austin. The unprecedented partnership between Caritas and Summit Housing Partners is set to break ground at Marshall Arms Apartments early this summer. The project promises superior living conditions for residents coupled with the highest quality social services provided by Caritas case management under Atherton’s leadership.
Prior to her work at Caritas, Atherton served as Executive Director of Healthcare Access, Referral and Enrollment with Seton Healthcare Network. Atherton has extensive experience in the nonprofit sector through her work in Business Development at insure a kid, a nonprofit dedicated to providing children with affordable health insurance. She also served as Deputy Director of Development and Community Resources at SafePlace and as Executive Director of the Heritage Society of Austin.
Atherton served as Chair and remains involved with One Voice Central Texas, a membership organization made up of community-based health and human service organizations representing the needs of clients. Atherton’s other credits include: serving as past president of The Junior League of Austin, a Leadership Austin alumna, and consultant for numerous area nonprofits. In addition, Atherton has served in various positions with her church and Les Amis de Hospice Austin, Helping Hand Home for Children and Settlement Home Club.
