Abstract:
The city of Austin has grown at record rates in the past two decades. It is evident in suburban growth, transportation problems and development in the city's inner-core. This is most evident in East Austin. Historically, East Austin has been economically and racially segregated from the rest of the city. Now Austin officials must cope with the affects of increasing property values on low- and middle-income residents. This case study on East Austin neighborhoods examines the history of crime and racial unrest in the area, and its evolution into a desirable region populated with condos, new cafes, boutiques and music venues. The study identifies the major issues facing the area and how the city plans to ease this ongoing transition for the neighborhood's long-time residents.
