About Katherine Muñoz
Health Education Coordinator - El Buen Samaritano Episcopal Mission

I was born in Pereria, Colombia during a time in which the rampant violence that categorized my country was only beginning to subside. As a result, my parents, my sister and I moved to Austin, Texas. This drastic relocation of culture and environment structured who I am today, a mixture of deeply rooted Colombian traditions and the formative experience gained through the American education and social systems. I was raised to value dedication, loyalty and hard work. These characteristics allowed me to structure my personality and the way that I carry myself professionally. The phase of my life that I currently find myself in has been one of great growth and advancement; one that I know will be pivotal for future advancements in my nutrition health career.

What is one thing you want to tell the Austin community about your organization?
I would like for the Austin community to know that El Buen Samaritano offers countless advancement opportunities, all seeking to provide a healthy life style for its residents.
What is the most rewarding thing about working in public/social service?
The most rewarding aspect of working in social service is to know that I impact individuals in a productive positive manner.
What was the "aha" moment that got you started in your current career/line of work?
The "aha" situation which lead to the realization that nutrition was my career of choice was being the only member in my entire family willing to remove the grease from foods and invest time in finding out what foods were healthy. This facet of my personality set me apart from my family, which rarely pays attention to the benefits of food and focuses more on the taste.
How long have you lived in Austin? What brought you here?
I have lived in Austin for 22 years. My parents and I moved here from Colombia when I was two, and we have lived here ever since.
What gadget can't you live with out?
I'm not sure how much of a gadget a stove can be considered, but I absolutely love eating home-cooked meals and living without a stove would deprive me of an essential component of my happiness.
What is your favorite Austin dining, entertainment, or outdoor experience?
My favorite Austin entertainment experiences have been at Esquina Tango. This is a nonprofit organization that continuously hosts world music, dance and cultural events.
