I have served as Project Supervisor and Homeless Liaison for AISD since 1998. I oversee Project HELP (Homeless Education and Learning Program) with a great staff, ensuring identification of students experiencing homelessness and services, in collaboration with key district personnel, local service and community partners. I am a graduate of St. Edwards University. I received my Bachelor of Religious Studies in 1987.  Prior to coming to work for Austin ISD,I worked for the Catholic Diocese of Austin, and several of the local Catholic Churches as  Coordinator of Support Ministries, Assistant to Director for Adult Leadership Formation and Director of Religious Education.  I received the Outstanding Homeless Liaison Award from the Texas Homeless Network in 1998.

Which of your personal traits is most important in making you a good leader?
My vigilance is important to making me a good leader. Serving children and youth experiencing homelessness requires the inner strength to stand up for their rights on a daily basis. Advocating for the removal of unnecessary barriers and reaching out to others to ensure much needed understanding and support is also a part of my daily work
What is the most rewarding thing about workign in public/social service?
The most rewarding part of working in public/social services are the moments of success expressed on the faces of parents and/or students we serve. When they experience their "aha" moment, recognizing they are not alone and they find the courage to love themselves in the midst of crisis. Sometimes, that is enough to turn the tide and lead to continued determination and hope.
What is the most significant issue you would like to be able to solve?
I would like to see our Austin community find a way to ensure permanent supportive housing for families experiencing homelessness. So that every child and unaccompanied youth can rest their head in a safe place every night and not have to wonder where they will be staying from one day to the next.
What is your favorite guilty pleasure?
My most favorite guilty pleasure is talking. I love to converse about anything and everything under the sun . I like to think that this vice is also a great strength. I believe that it shows me as I am --genuine, sincere, and willing to help make a difference.
How long have you lived in Austin? What is your favorite Austin experience?
I was born and raised in Austin and have lived here all my life, by choice. It is a beautiful city. Austin folks are so welcoming and willing to come together. My husband, three children and one grandchild love to get out to our favorite spots. These include Zilker Park, at "the rock" by the soccer fields, where we climb and enjoy the wonderful spring-like days in the middle of winter. We also enjoy the Austin public libraries. They offer wonderful opportunities for people of all ages.
